Prenatal Care
Our services include an introductory meeting free of charge so that you may be able to get to know us better and make an informed decision as to whether we are the right midwifery team for you. As your midwife, Dominique will provide you with individualized care in her office monthly until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, and then weekly until you have your baby. These appointments usually last an hour and include standard practices similar to any obstetrical provider. At every visit we will monitor you and your baby’s vitals and growth, blood work as needed, urinalysis, nutritional counseling and so much more.
Ultrasound
Birth & Biodynamic Midwifery has in-house ultrasound services available including early pregnancy confirmation, placenta locating, and position checks. For more in-depth anatomy scans and congenital screens you will be referred Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Water Birth
Many of our clients choose to birth their babies in the water. They do so because of the comfort and relief that water provides to the laboring mother and the gentle elasticity that hydration provides to the skin. Your Midwife will provide a Birth tub for you as apart of your midwifery care.
Newborn Care
Although we provide immediate newborn examination, newborn eye prophylaxis, PKU screening and well baby checkups for the first 6 weeks postpartum, we recommend that you obtain an appropriate care provider for your newborn before labor and delivery, especially if you desire to have your newborn receive vaccination, circumcision, etc. If you would like counseling on those options and more, we are happy to provide education and resources.
Diagnostic Testing
Contrary to popular belief, midwifery care can be just as high-tech as the main medical model with services including routine blood draws and lab work. Prenatal diagnostics include urinalysis, blood pressure, lab draws such as CBC, glucose, and blood typing, pap smears, Group B Strep cultures, and genetic screening.
Labor & Delivery
We are available to be present at your labor whenever you want support and not at some pre-defined stage. We will obtain vital signs initially and regularly as labor progresses. The baby’s heart tones are monitored throughout the course of labor and more frequently as the birth approaches. We will speak extensively throughout your prenatal care about how you envision your birth and personalize it to your desires.
Postpartum Care
After the birth when both mother and baby are stable and content, a newborn exam will be done. Both mother and baby’s vitals will be monitored on a regular basis, breastfeeding will be initiated, and we will guide the new family as they settle into normal postpartum routines. We will care for you and your baby from birth until 6 weeks postpartum. You and your baby will be seen at 24-48 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks and 6 weeks postpartum.
Lactation Support
Support on your breastfeeding journey is important to us and we will impart years of wisdom from helping moms and babies figure out breastfeeding.
Prenatal Care Only
Affordable Quality Care: $150 Initial Visit / $100 Regular Visit
Will you be moving before you are due? Come in for your prenatal care and pay only for the services provided. In the end, if you decide to birth with us we will apply your previously made payments to our global fee.
Ultrasounds
In House /Free For Our Clients
We offer in house ultrasound to gather basic information like pregnancy confirmation and baby’s position, but if more in depth information is needed, we will recommend scheduling an appointment with The Prenatal Diagnostic Center or UVA for a more in depth sonogram.
Newborn Hearing Screening
In House /Free For Our Clients
As a separate service: $75 in office
Although most parents believe they can tell if their newborn can hear, you can’t by simply observing the newborn. Hearing deficits can go undetected for 2-3 years causing major problems with language development and social skills. It can also become less treatable the later they are diagnosed. Virginia law requires all newborns to receive a non-invasive hearing screening which we routinely do at your first postpartum visit. Our hearing screenings are also available for newborns delivered by other providers.
IUD Removal
Our Price: FREE
Looking to have your IUD removed? We will remove it for FREE. The IUD strings must be accessible. If your IUD proves complicated to remove, we must refer to you a physician for removal.
Placental Encapsulation
Our Price: $300 and takes 1 week to process
The custom of consuming the placenta, often done as placental encapsulation, is centuries old, practiced most often in Chinese medicine.
Placental encapsulation is the practice of ingesting the placenta after it has been steamed, dehydrated, ground, and placed into pills. Traditionally, this is taken by the mother and is believed to impart numerous health benefits. It is frequently taken shortly after giving birth, during a woman’s menstrual period, or during menopause with the belief that it helps counter some of the symptoms of menopause.
Benefits:
- Increased release of the hormone oxytocin, which helps the uterus return to normal size and encourages bonding with the infant
- Increase in CRH, a stress-reducing hormone
- Restoration of iron/hemoglobin levels in the blood
- Increase in milk production
- Boosts daily energy reserves
