My name is Dominique Clothiaux and I am a Biodynamic Midwife, Birth Consultant, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist and founder of Birth & Biodynamic Midwifery.
Biodynamic Midwifery is about allowing the biological and physiological blueprint of birth to unfold without interference or intervention except to facilitate well-being. All decision making regarding client care are made by the family with information and education provided by the midwife to facilitate an informed choice. This is called Informed Consent and it is one of the hallmarks of the Midwifery Model of Care. I take great pride in providing evidence-based information, clinical expertise, and when appropriate, consultation or referral to other providers to aid the client in their decision making process.
As a Midwife, I have attended nearly 500 births and specialize in out-of-hospital birth. I have have studied and observed birth dynamics since 2008. Through my work I hope to protect the sanctity of physiological birth and to help foster the understanding and importance about the Primal Health Period.
I am a Licensed Midwife by the Virginia Board of Medicine & a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) with the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). I completed a formal study program in midwifery through the Academy of Experiential Midwifery Education followed by a series of clinical apprenticeship with 10 amazing senior midwives and an Osteopathic Physician over a 5 year period.
Other certifications I keep up with are: Registered Craniosacral Therapist® with the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America, Approved Continuing Education Provider with the National Certification Board of Massage and Bodywork, Pre and Perinatal Birth Educator through The Kutenai Institute of Integral Therapies, Virginia State Licensed Massage Therapist, Neonatal Resuscitation Provider
Outside of Midwifery Care, I offer Manual Therapy to release deep tensions around the central nervous system. I have extensive experience working with colicky, over stimulated, unsettled babies through infant hydrotherapy and craniosacral bodywork. Massage and Bodywork is included in all prenatal care.
Practice Philosophy
Because the main focus of my work for over a decade has been focused on how to subtly release deep tensions centered around the central nervous system; my presence is centered on Stillness while supporting physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
Quality of prenatal care has a vast affect on birth outcomes. The best prenatal care includes one that addressed both the physical and emotional well being of the mother. It is together that we can make birth an empowering experience, one that will carry you successfully into motherhood.
I offer a therapeutic approach throughout pregnancy and the entire birthing process. I provide all clinical aspects of maternity care and am a primary caregiver throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum and newborn time periods while working with one woman at a time through loving continual support in a way that will not judge you but rather meet you in the place you already are.
Prenatal Care
During your 1 hour prenatal visits, I take my time to address every question and concern you may have. During pregnancy we will be reviewing what you and your baby will be experiencing during the labor and birth and how I can best support you. During each prenatal I monitor both you and your baby’s vitals signs by taking pulse, blood pressure, measurements, baby’s heart rate, and sometimes blood work and urine samples. When medically necessary I recommend other tests.
Labor & Birth
I will attend you in your home to monitor both you and your baby’s well-being while helping you labor as you birth your baby. Once your baby is born I continue to monitor both you and your baby to ensure that both transition well. I will do a thorough newborn exam and not leave until all is well and you are feeling confident. If there were a need for medical services at the hospital I would go with you and stay with you as your advocate throughout the birth process.
Postpartum & Newborn Care
I remain on call for you during the first six weeks postpartum and I am licensed to care for both you and your baby for six weeks.
My personal journey has been about healing the psyche around trauma centered on the pre and perinatal time period within my own life. I ran away to India at the age of 18 and choose to devote my life for the betterment of humanity. I spent the better part of her 20’s long distance backpacking solo with ‘Marvin the Wonder Dog’ where we covered over 5,000 miles in the backcountry in the US of A together. I was raised in the Lakota/Dakota traditions and dream of one day handing back the art of midwifery to my star family. My formal education and main area of interest is centered on understanding the dance between the living physiology, central nervous system function, neuroscience, embryology, birth and the midwifery model of care. My entire life has secretly been preparing me to be a Midwife. Outside of studying the living physiology of Birth & Biodynamics I enjoy being with my horse and am an avid abstract painter. I have maintained a devoted yoga, prayer and meditation practice since 1997. I love all things spiritual. My relationship with my higher power is very important to me. Through the miracles I have had the privilege to witnessed in life. They have organically lead me to believe in an omni-present God, who loves us very much. I do not follow a particular belief but I study all world religions and seek spiritual understanding from nature. Growing up, I attended a Krishnamurti based nature school. Krishnamurti’s main concern was an inquiry as to how we could raise children without the conditioning of our society so that they may become who they were meant to be without telling them how to BE. I have been blessed with a loving family and am the mother to a beautiful daughter who showed up late in life after dealing with a lifetime of infertility.
