Home Birth Serving Charlottesville Virginia & Surrounding Area
You may be wondering if home birth is a safe option for you and your family?
Home birth is a safe choice especially when you are in good health through out your pregnancy. Not only that but a home birth midwife can help you to achieve good health throughout your entire pregnancy. For women with low risk pregnancies in North America, giving birth at home bears similar risks of intrapartum and neonatal mortality as giving birth in hospital, but planned home births are associated with lower rates of medical interventions and higher satisfaction rate. A 2023 summary of the best available research published in the internationally recognized Cochrane Library shows that planned hospital births can do more harm than good. This applies if the pregnant woman is healthy, expects an uncomplicated birth, and the birth takes place in a well-organized health care system.
On April 10, 2024 the Cochrane Library published an Evidence Synthesis based on the continuity of midwifery care. The research looked at 17 randomized controlled studies. The review found that women who received midwifery continuity of care models were less likely to experience caesarean section or instrumental birth, were more likely to experience spontaneous vaginal birth and, report a positive experience. Additionally, midwifery continuity of care provides benefits for health services through cost savings in the antenatal (care during pregnancy) and intrapartum (care during labour and birth) period. Further findings also proved that preterm birth and fetal loss was equal too, if not better than the medical model outcomes.
In 2019, a large systematic review and meta-analysis was published in The Lancet. It looked at 14 studies including data from around 500,000 intended home births. The authors found that, “The risk of perinatal or neonatal mortality was not different when birth was intended at home or in hospital.” (Hutton et al 2019).
These are just a very few of the studies that prove the saltiness of home birth midwives! The evidence keeps coming in not only in the United States but world wide.
